Live: Kenton Slash Demon

I was really looking forward to Kenton Slash Demon after listening to Sun and quickly running through a couple of their other tracks on YouTube. Sun is amazing, I’ll say that much. As they kick it off the second Wareika gets off the stage, at first I’m not aware they’ve already begun – just that I like what’s started to play. What I don’t like is that there’s way more bass than anyone could need. I don’t know if they’ve requested it or if it’s the sound guy who screwed up. Other than that though, this is quickly looking good. After a bout of rather fast and heavy beats, there is a break followed by a switch to a slower beat. It’s fun the way they keep varying the tempo and character. There are a lot of breaks in there and they’re doing plenty of teasing, keeping the audience waiting for them to let it all loose again. But then there’s this one break where they push it too far, everything stops and the energy on the floor is about to go to waste.

Luckily it doesn’t. They take off again, and it’s still pretty great. It’s clean: a good mix of heaviness and class. For a while I even appreciate the ridiculously loud bass, as a nice contrast to the breaks. However, Kenton Slash Demon keep varying between playing stuff that’s in the style of Sun, and ”tracks” that are basically rhythmic bass and little else. Maybe it’s just that other nuances are drowned out by the aforementioned flaw. Probably not though: towards what I’m guessing is the end of the show it’s starting to sound like an EBM party. I leave before the end of the gig, because I can’t take any more of this most base of bass use.
